What is speed to lead?

Also called Time to first touch.

Speed to lead is the time between a homeowner submitting an inquiry and a business making real contact. It is measured from the submission, not from when the office opens.

Why it matters for a contractor.

The homeowner filled two or three forms in one sitting. Past a minute conversion halves, which makes this the cheapest conversion lever most contractors have.

The reason a minute matters is not that fast is impressive. It is that the first real conversation frames every conversation after it. Whoever reaches the homeowner first sets the scope, names the range, and books the visit, and everyone who calls later is quoting against a number they did not choose.

Most of the loss happens outside business hours. A large share of home improvement inquiries land between 7pm and 11pm, from a homeowner standing in the room they want changed, and weekends are not the dead zone contractors assume. A lane that only runs while the office is staffed buys evening leads and hands them to whoever automated their nights.

Measure the distribution, not the average. A four-minute average usually means most inquiries got a fast answer and a handful sat until morning, and the ones that sat are the ones that cost you. Pull the ten slowest responses from last month and read them; that list is your real speed to lead.

What to ask a vendor about it.

  • What is my current time to first touch, and who measured it?
  • What happens to a form submitted at 9pm on a Saturday?
  • Does the first touch qualify the homeowner, or only acknowledge them?
  • Where does the handoff to a human happen, and who owns it?
